Who we are
Moira Methodist Church is a Christ-centred congregation, living, working, witnessing and worshipping God, in the heart of Moira, Co. Down, UK.
The Methodist Church grew from a movement formed within the Church of England in the mid-eighteenth century. The movement's founders included brothers, Charles and John Wesley.
John was a Church of England minister and he and his hymn writer brother Charles, were members of a group of young men who met daily to pray and study the Bible whilst at Oxford University. Nicknamed 'The Holy Club', because they were so methodical in their lifestyle, they quickly earned the nickname 'Methodists'.
John visited Moira in 1760 as a guest of Lord Rawdon, preaching to an assembled congregation outside St. John's Church. By the latter part of the eighteenth century, Methodists were meeting for worship regularly in Moira at a converted storehouse in the vicinity of Moira Mews. In 1822, a purpose built Church was constructed on Main Street, Moira, which served until 2017. On 27 October 2018, the all-new Moira Methodist Centre opened on the same site, comprising a Church, Church Hall, Coffee Bar and Meeting Rooms.
Today, Moira Methodist is one of over 200 churches that together comprise the Methodist Church in Ireland. We're part of the Glenavy & Moira Methodist Circuit, which straddles 3 counties and includes Methodist churches at Craigmore, Co. Armagh and Glenavy, Co. Antrim. Working closely with other churches in Moira, we're committed to realising God's vision for our village.
